Half Day

At noon meet your guide for a tour of the Beijing hutongs and a glimpse of what life was like in ancient China. These traditional neighborhoods date back centuries and are disappearing at an alarming rate as Beijing modernizes. The wood and stone craftsmanship in these hutongs is intricate and is not seen in modern Chinese buildings. Your hutong tour will include lunch with a local family. From the hutongs head to the center of the city for a tour of the Forbidden City. This was the ancient home to the imperial family and it is a marvelous monument to Chinese architecture. The palace also contains a magnificent collection of Chinese bronzes, porcelain, paintings, jade and other treasures. Then visit Tiananmen Square, the largest city square in the world. It is on this square where China’s leaders preside over the enormous rallies that take place. Finish the day with the most celebrated KungFu show in China at the Red Theater.

Full Day

Start the day with a trip to the Great Wall. The Great Wall is one of the great wonders of the world. There is nothing quite like standing on the top tower, looking at the Wall snaking its way across the tops of the mountains, and envisioning ancient armies locked in combat, the Great Wall at Badaling is about 50 km north west of Beijing. On your way back to the city, have lunch and visit the Beijing Cloisonné ware factory. Cloisonné is a famous local craft form. The technique of making Cloisonné with inlaid copper and enamel filling was developed over 500 years ago during the Ming Dynasty. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. In the evening have a traditional Peking Duck dinner before enjoying a dazzling Chinese acrobatics performance at a local theater.
